The invisible general of the square

Sir Alex Ferguson with a young McTominay

In modern football, where players are often judged by their social media following and visual effects, Scott McTominay seems like a relic from a different era. He is a player whose career has been in doubt many times, but every time he was written off, he has returned to the pitch like a true “phoenix.”

Scott has been in the Manchester United system since the age of 5. He didn't look like the physically strong "monster" we know today at first. He played as a centre forward in the academy, but due to biological growth problems, his career was on the line. In 2015, at the age of 18, Scott was just 168 cm tall. The club thought he would not be able to physically move up. However, in just 18 months he miraculously grew 25 centimetres to 193 cm. This dramatic change also changed his position - from attacking to midfield.

“In the big games, Scotty has to be on the pitch all the time. I watched him against PSG in Paris – he was absolutely brilliant. He’s a great character guy and reminds me a lot of my old midfielders who gave their all on the pitch.”

-Sir Alex Ferguson

Junior Academy Coach, Warren Joyce: “He was a small boy, but he had amazing technique and character. When he grew so much, his body changed so quickly that he could barely coordinate himself. A lot of players break down at that point, but Scott worked so hard that he managed his new body perfectly.”

His debut for the first team came in May 2017 against Arsenal. Jose Mourinho saw in him what he loved most: discipline, tactical obedience and dedication.

The McTominay and Fred duo was named “McFred”

In 2018, at the end of the season, Mourinho created the "Manager's Player of the Season" award specifically for McTominay, which had not previously existed at the club, to recognise the Scot's work.

Under Solskjaer, McTominay became the backbone of the team alongside Fred (the duo were nicknamed "McFred" by fans). It was at this time that his talent emerged - scoring goals in the most important matches.

Unlike today's footballers, Scott didn't use social media actively for years. While at the academy, on the advice of his coaches, he had an "old man's" phone (similar to a Nokia 3310) so that he could focus solely on football.

A new home

In the summer of 2024, despite much opposition from United fans (they did not want to let their protégé go), Scott moved to Napoli for €30 million due to financial regulations. He fit perfectly into Antonio Conte's tactics and became one of the best midfielders in Serie A. Neapolitan fans immediately nicknamed him "McTotem" for his fighting spirit.

"Scott is a player who has everything: physical strength, technique, tactical intelligence and, most importantly, a goal-scoring ability. He is not just a midfielder, he is a dominant force on the pitch. I am happy to have him with us."

-Antonio Conte

When he moved to Napoli, the club's strict nutritionists put him on a special diet because he had become too fond of Italian pizza and pasta. Conte personally warned him that his weight would be closely monitored.

The King of Scotland

Despite being born in England, he chose the Scottish national team because of his father (and on the personal advice of Alex Ferguson).

McTominay was the top scorer in Scotland’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with 7 goals. He scored a brace against Spain and Cyprus cementing his place into Scottish legend. Scotland qualified for the 2026 World cup for the first time since 1998 thanks to a McTominay overhead kick.

Scott McTominay's career is the best proof that character is as valuable as talent in modern football. He may never have been the most elegant player on the pitch, but he was always the most reliable soldier. From the rainy Manchester training ground to the passionate stadium of Naples, Scott has proven one thing: The colour of the shirt doesn't matter — he leaves his heart on any pitch. "McTotem" is writing new history today, but his football philosophy remains the same: less talk, more fight until the last second...
