“I believe in my experience and football potential. I’m trying to shut my head off and let the body guide me. As soon as you think too much about things like that, something just goes wrong.”
— Lukáš Horníček
Lukáš Horníček was born in Vysoké Mýto, yet he belongs to Dobříkov, a hamlet where the football pitch is the busiest spot on the map. His father kept goal for the local club, so the game's loneliest job was a family trade long before it became his own. In 2008 he joined Sokol Dobříkov, and a year later Pardubice took notice and signed him. Over the following decade he passed through their academy, growing into a towering keeper who would eventually stand 1.97 metres tall.
Then came the leap. Shortly after his seventeenth birthday, Horníček flew to Portugal for a trial loan at Braga, swapping rural hush for foreign ambition. It was a gamble on a teenager far from home, in a new language, among strangers. The audition turned into a permanent contract, and he climbed rung by rung, first through the youth ranks, then with the reserve side, where he made 37 appearances, and finally into the senior squad, where he logged 52 more.
Coaches and observers noticed his composure before anything else. His face reveals nothing, a poker mask that earned him the nickname "Iceman". Behind that calm sat patient, methodical labour, and one skill above all: his distribution improved enormously, and he now ranks highly for sweeping and long passing, exactly what modern sides demand of a last line of defence.
“He is 6ft 6in but he doesn’t act like it. his agility is amazing, his Reflexes are top. snap reactions, quick saves.”
- Kevin Fernandes (Portuguese football journalist)
Recognition followed in quick succession. He started against England and Germany at the 2025 Under-21 European Championship, made his senior Czech debut in a 2–1 win over Kosovo in May 2026, and travelled to the World Cup as part of the squad. Then came Newcastle, who were reportedly hunting for a new first-choice keeper and prepared to pay a sizeable release clause. He became the third Czech to wear the club's shirt, after David Rozehnal and Pavel Srníček, the goalkeeper who guarded St James' Park for eight seasons. A boy from a tiny pitch in Bohemia now stands where a Czech legend once stood.
“Every player has some value, and it doesn’t automatically mean I’m better than someone else. It’s often about what league the player is leaving, and thank God I’ve been leaving Braga, which has a big name and could ask for such money.”
- Lukáš Horníček
“My mom had a very funny reaction for joining Newcastle. She doesn’t watch much football and the first thing she asked was if it (the Premier League) was any good. It was funny and I had to explain to her that I was going to one of the best leagues in the world. She likes to watch me, she even comes to the game. But she doesn’t watch it that much and sometimes she calls me an hour before the game and I have to tell her that I can’t (speak) because I’m going to the pitch. But I’m used to it.”
- Lukáš Horníček
His move to the North of England has been very promising. After the £25M transfer fee and the promise of the No.1 spot, Lukas made the most saves of any goalkeeper in the league in the first 5 games. With 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss Newcastle have made a good start and Lukáš Horníček is a key part of that.
“We have the best fans in England. I have never experienced a better atmosphere anywhere else than here.”
- Lukáš Horníček
